The first thing most people want to know about MicroDuck is simple:
What can this thing actually do?
The answer is more interesting than "it walks."
MicroDuck ships with a set of trained behaviors that let it walk, sit, crouch, grasp objects, kick a ball, roll with its roller setup, and stand back up after falling. Pollen says seven trained moves are included in the box.
But a list of movements does not tell you much about what owning the robot might feel like.
So let's translate the features into something more useful.
It can walk
This is the obvious one.
MicroDuck is a bipedal robot, and walking is one of the behaviors already available in its software.
That sounds simple until you compare it with most desk gadgets.
A screen can move an animation.
A smart speaker can answer you.
A small robot can physically change where it is.
That creates a different kind of presence.
It can roll
Put the roller setup on and MicroDuck can switch to rolling behavior. The software repository includes a dedicated rolling behavior alongside its walking policy.
This is a small detail, but it changes the visual personality of the robot.
It is not just a machine performing a predefined animation.
It can physically move through your space in different ways.
It can pick things up
MicroDuck can use its mouth-like gripper to grasp objects. The official materials show grasping as one of its trained behaviors.
This is where a desk robot starts to feel more like a robot.
The robot is no longer only controlling its own body.
It can interact with something outside itself.
That is an important step toward the kind of robot experiences people imagine when they hear "AI robot."
It also does not mean MicroDuck is a general-purpose household worker.
Grasping one object and reliably doing useful physical chores are very different problems.
It can sit and kick a ball
These behaviors may look like novelty, and honestly, they are partly there to be fun.
That's not necessarily a bad thing.
A consumer robot has to give you a reason to interact with it.
A robot that can kick a ball, move around your desk, and respond with different physical behaviors is much easier to imagine as something you play with.
It can get back up
One of the more interesting behaviors is recovery.
If the robot is knocked over, its software includes a behavior for standing itself back up.
That is more meaningful than it sounds.
A robot that falls and stays there feels fragile.
A robot that falls and gets back up feels more alive.
It is still just a programmed behavior. But from the user's perspective, that little difference changes how the machine feels.
You can control it manually
MicroDuck can be driven with a game controller, and the public documentation includes dedicated instructions for pairing and controlling the robot.
That gives you an immediate way to interact with it without needing to start with robot training.
This matters for ordinary buyers.
You don't want the first thing you do with a new robot to be reading a robotics paper.
What it cannot do
This is just as important.
MicroDuck is not currently a general-purpose home robot.
It is not a robot maid.
It is not a fully autonomous assistant that can handle your email, clean your room, or manage your household.
Those are possibilities people may imagine for a future generation of consumer robots, but they should not be confused with what MicroDuck ships with today.
So what is the interesting part?
The interesting part is not one individual behavior.
It is the combination.
MicroDuck can move itself.
It can interact with objects.
It can sense its environment.
It can run learned movement policies.
And its software stack is open enough for people to experiment with what comes next.
That gives it more room to grow than a robot whose behavior is entirely fixed.
For a buyer, the useful question is therefore not only:
"What can MicroDuck do today?"
It is also:
"How much do I care about what it could become?"
That is where the real value of a robot like this starts to appear.
