The first day with a new robot is easy.
You want to see everything.
Make it walk.
Make it sit.
Try the roller skates.
Watch it pick something up.
Knock it over.
Watch it stand back up.
Show somebody else.
Then you eventually reach the uncomfortable question:
Okay. What do I actually do with this thing now?
I think that's the more important question.
Start with the obvious stuff
MicroDuck currently comes with trained behaviors for walking, sitting, crouching, grasping, kicking, roller-skating, and recovering after a fall. (Pollen Robotics)
So there is already more to play with than a robot that simply repeats one animation.
And I wouldn't underestimate the value of that.
A lot of the fun comes from seeing how the same little robot behaves differently depending on what you're doing with it.
Give it a little challenge
One simple way to make a robot more interesting is to stop treating its behavior as a demonstration.
Instead of:
"Look, it can walk."
Try:
"Can I get it from here to there?"
Instead of:
"It can grasp."
Try:
"Can it pick up this particular object?"
Instead of:
"It can kick."
Try:
"Can I actually play a little game with it?"
The robot hasn't changed.
Your interaction with it has.
And that's often where the fun comes from.
The physical part is the point
This is why I think MicroDuck is fundamentally different from an AI app.
If you ask an AI:
"Can you play a game with me?"
you'll probably get an answer.
With a physical robot, you can actually put something in front of it.
There's a real object.
A real surface.
Real movement.
Real failure.
That makes even simple activities more interesting.
The robot might fall over.
It might miss.
It might do something slightly weird.
Honestly, those imperfections are part of the fun.
Try giving it a personality yourself
This isn't a feature claim.
It's something I'd actually do.
If I had one, I'd probably start giving it a personality in my head.
Maybe it always gets excited when it sees a certain toy.
Maybe I decide it's terrible at something.
Maybe I give it a name.
Maybe one particular movement becomes "its thing."
That sounds silly.
But that's how objects become personal.
You're no longer interacting with:
"a MicroDuck."
You're interacting with:
your MicroDuck.
And I think that's much more important for a companion robot.
You don't need to train anything to start
This is worth repeating because the technical side of MicroDuck can make it look much more complicated than it needs to be.
The robot already comes with trained behaviors, and Pollen explicitly describes it as playable before writing code. (Pollen Robotics)
So don't approach it like a robotics assignment.
Approach it like a toy first.
See if it's fun.
If it is, then you can decide how deep you want to go.
But there is a second layer if you want it

You can ignore that completely.
Or you can become curious.
That's a nice property.
You're not forced to decide on day one whether you're a "robot person."
What I wouldn't do
I wouldn't sit down and make a giant list of twenty things I expect the robot to do.
That's a good way to disappoint yourself.
I'd start with what the robot actually does.
Then I'd ask:
"What's fun about this?"
Then:
"What would make this more fun?"
That is a much more natural way to explore a product like this.
Some ideas are more interesting than others
I'd personally rank them roughly like this.
Watching it move: fun.
Controlling it: more fun.
Making it interact with something: better.
Creating a little challenge: even better.
Having it recognize and react to you: where things start getting really interesting.
The last one depends heavily on the software experience, so I wouldn't treat every possible interaction as something MicroDuck already supports.
But that's the kind of progression I'd look for.
The robot doesn't have to be useful
I think people sometimes put too much pressure on consumer robots.
"What problem does it solve?"
Maybe none.
Maybe it makes you smile.
Maybe you enjoy watching it roll around while you're working.
Maybe you play with it for ten minutes.
Maybe your friends think it's hilarious.
That's still a valid reason to own something.
A pet doesn't need a productivity dashboard.
A desktop robot doesn't necessarily need one either.
The best outcome is probably not "infinite things to do"
That's another misconception.
You don't need a robot with 500 activities.
You need enough interaction that the robot stays interesting.
A few good behaviors can be enough if they combine well.
And MicroDuck has a useful starting point because its behaviors are physical rather than purely visual. (Pollen Robotics)
Walking around the room can become one thing.
Walking toward something can become another.
Grasping adds another layer.
Rolling changes the way it moves.
Those pieces can be combined into little experiences.
So what would I actually do after the first day?
I'd probably keep it simple.
I'd see where I naturally wanted it to go.
I'd give it something to interact with.
I'd make up small games.
I'd see what my friends do with it.
And if I started wondering:
"Can it do that?"
I'd look deeper.
That's probably the healthiest way to approach MicroDuck.
Don't buy it with a giant list of expectations.
Start with the little robot that's actually in front of you.
Then see whether you naturally start finding things to do with it.
If you do, that's a much better sign than any feature list.
